Federal Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying (AMAD): our close watch

As soon as the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying (AMAD; Senate and House of Commons of Canada) began its work, we intervened in the public arena by means of this press release.

Since then, we have been closely following the progress of this work via our Facebook and Twitter pages with the keyword #AMAD.

We discovered this week that the deadline for sharing a brief with the committee is extremely tight: Monday, May 9 at 4pm EDT! We are very disappointed that this deadline is prior to the submission of the Report of the Expert Panel on Medical Assistance in Dying and Mental Illness.

Unfortunately, this information is not made public. As briefs must be short (less than 1,000 words), it is still possible to share your thoughts with the AMAD Committee via this page.

UPDATE: New deadline, May 30.

The Committee is currently looking at “issues related to mature minors, advance directives, mental illness, the state of palliative care in Canada and the protection of Canadians with disabilities”.

Here are links to the most relevant interventions since the beginning of the committee’s work (updated as the meetings progress).
