target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THE NEXT FRONTIER IN THE &#8216;RIGHT TO DIE&#8217;: ADVANCE REQUESTS, MINORS AND THE MENTALLY ILL<\/a><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Canadians are walking into new territory on the right to die, commencing a debate over whether Parliament should allow minors and the mentally ill to end their lives with the help of a doctor. Just days before breaking for the holidays, the Liberal government received three expert panel reports from the Council of Canadian Academies which looked at the possibility of extending medical assistance in dying (MAID)\u00a0to &#8216;mature&#8217; minors \u2014 people under age 18 considered by doctors to be capable of directing their own care \u2014 people with psychiatric conditions and those making requests in advance.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>28 May 2018<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/vancouver\/2018\/05\/28\/bc-civil-liberties-association-aims-to-speed-up-legal-challenge-to-federal-assisted-dying-law.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BC CIVIL LIBERTIES ASSOCIATION AIMS TO SPEED UP LEGAL CHALLENGE TO FEDERAL EUTHANASIA LAW<\/a><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The BCCLA is headed back to court, hoping to convince a B.C. Court of Appeal judge to speed up the civil-rights group\u2019s fight to change Canada\u2019s doctor-assisted dying legislation. The BCCLA hopes the appeals court will allow the organization to challenge the government\u2019s legislation, Bill C-14, at a trial, without rehashing what\u2019s already been decided by the Supreme Court of Canada.
