As the minister responsible for the bill at the time, she gave an interview to the CBC radio show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/thecurrent\/popupaudio.html?clipIds=2433494864\">The Current<\/a> last January.<\/p>\n<h3>First step<\/h3>\n<p>Those who deny the \u201cslippery slope\u201d effect should be aware that the very people who introduced Bill 52 and \u201cmedical aid in dying\u201d intended a broader scope than that outlined in the bill tabled in the National Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>When questioned about <a href=\"\/en\/2014\/02\/in-belgium-children-can-now-be-euthanized-and-in-quebec\/\">Belgium opening euthanasia to children<\/a>, Mrs. Hivon explained that Bill 52 only focused on people of full age and competent to make a decision. She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt was important to do that to reach consensus, to go forward, it was important to take this first important step\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That statement makes it crystal clear that there was an intention to expand \u201cmedical aid in dying\u201d after the adoption of Bill 52, and that the only reason the scope of the Bill was limited was to reach consensus.<\/p>\n<h3>No consensus<\/h3>\n<p>However, despite a strong effort and many claims, there is no consensus. <a href=\"\/en\/2014\/04\/no-consensus-on-euthanasia-in-quebec\/\">As we recently wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThere is no consensus among MNAs or among physicians. There is no consensus among people with disabilities. Nor is there unanimous agreement within the Quebec population.
