We are delighted to welcome you to another season of newsletters from the Living with Dignity citizen network.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Our press release, which was sent out last Monday<\/a> in response to the announcement of the implementation of advance requests for medical assistance in dying as of October 30 in Quebec did not generate any media coverage, apart from a mention <\/span>on the G\u00e8n\u00e9thique information site<\/a> (in French). However, we have confirmation that it was read by many journalists. We also received a lot of positive feedback from our allies after its publication, and we will be preparing further actions in the coming weeks.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

On September 11, the <\/span>Ministry of Health and Social Services updated its website (in French) to provide details of the measure for advance MAiD applications<\/a>. We are still waiting with interest for the protocols that will be in force for assessing people diagnosed with a cognitive disorder and for administering MAiD to people incapable of giving consent…<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

On September 19, we will also be listening to <\/span>the documentary series La Mort libre<\/i><\/span><\/a> (Free Death), prepared by Radio-Canada journalists Alain Gravel and Alexandre Sheldon. You can count on us to respond quickly to the content that will be available on the Ohdio platform (app and website).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Since\nthe announcement of the implementation of advance requests for MAiD in Quebec\non October 30, there have been many expressions of support and relief, with\nmany people delighted that it will soon be available. There were also many\nquestions about the legal protection of the professionals that will be involved\nin administering MAiD.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\n\n<\/p>

We\nwould like to highlight two voices that stood out from the crowd in their\nconstructive exposition of the problems associated with the application of such\na measure.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

You\nmay have heard the cry from the heart of Val\u00e9rie Daigle, mother of Gr\u00e9gory, who\ndied in Quebec this summer at the age of 11. She denounced the conditions under\nwhich he died.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Gr\u00e9gory\nlived with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. He was a happy boy living with a\nloving family. During an operation last June, he contracted a bacterium and his\ncondition rapidly deteriorated. Two weeks later, he had to receive comfort\ncare.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Here\nis the story of the end of his life, <\/span>as reported by Radio-Canada<\/a> (in French, our translation).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u201cFor\nseven weeks, his loved ones stayed at Gr\u00e9gory’s bedside as he went through a\nlong period of agony. (…) She (his mother) would have hoped for an earlier,\ngentle departure. Holding his hand, surrounded by his loved ones, while a\ndoctor administered the injection that would quickly put him out of his misery.\nThe Canadian law on medical assistance in dying does not allow this. She wants\nan amendment with extremely clear guidelines. \u2018I don’t want a child to die\nbecause he’s disabled. My little fellow has had an extraordinary life over the\nlast 11 years, despite his differences and his limitations. However, there\ncomes a time when the limit is reached and these children no longer have any\nquality of life and suffer a great deal. That’s when we have to consider the\noption.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

On\nthis issue, <\/span>On this issue, even the Association\nqu\u00e9b\u00e9coise pour le droit de mourir dans la dignit\u00e9 (Quebec Association for the\nRight to Die with Dignity) is opposed to such a broadening of the law<\/a> . <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

In\nresponse to Gr\u00e9gory’s end of life, the right thing to do is not to open the\ndoor to substituted consents allowing MAiD for children and\/or people incapable\nof giving consent. We are convinced that better access to quality paediatric\npalliative care must be promoted throughout Quebec.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Faced\nwith these difficult ethical debates, we sincerely acknowledge Ms Daigle’s\nsuffering and would like to offer our condolences to all of Gr\u00e9gory’s family\nand friends.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
