With the last election platform presented on\nTuesday, it has taken some time during this campaign to get a clearer picture\nof the positions of the main parties in the running.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

This special edition of the newsletter will\nprovide more details on the promises (and lack thereof) related to this issue.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

We would like to commend the Green Party of\nCanada, which is the only party to have responded to the UN recommendations\nfrom the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (see below).<\/span><\/p>\n\n

We would also like to thank the Physicians\u2019 Alliance against Euthanasia<\/b>\nfor sharing an open letter to La Presse in response to the letter from the\nColl\u00e8ge des m\u00e9decins du Qu\u00e9bec (Quebec College of Physicians) asking the next\ngovernment to allow advance requests for MAID. It was not published, but it\nhas been online since today on their website<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here is an excerpt:<\/span><\/p>\n\n

MAiD by advance request is popular in opinion\npolls because of fear. Fear of suffering, of ageing, of being abandoned by\none\u2019s family, of being mistreated in a hospital or a CHSLD because of ageism,\nableism or insufficient resources. Instead of seeking solutions to these\nlegitimate fears, the CMQ agitates for a short-cut to death. What happened to\nprotecting the public? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n

On a very personal note, you may have noticed\nthat I spoke publicly on Monday on the occasion of the death of Pope Francis. I\nam grateful to our board of directors for giving me the freedom to do so. We\ntrust that people can distinguish between my strong, citizen-based\napproach\u2014free of religious or political affiliation\u2014and my personal wish to pay\ntribute to Francis.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

It is\nregrettable that the issue of medical assistance in dying, which is central to\nethical and social debates in Canada, has not been addressed head-on during the\ncurrent federal election campaign. While issues surrounding advance requests\nfor MAID and access for people with mental illness are of growing concern to\nthe public, the lack of clear positions from party leaders leaves a void in the\npublic debate. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
