During this National Palliative\nCare Week (May 4-10), we are pleased to share with you the press release issued\nby the Quebec Coalition for Access to Palliative Care, of which we are a proud\nmember.<\/p>\n\n

In Quebec City, I will be\nparticipating on your behalf from May 8th to 9th in the 34th annual conference\nof the Association qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise de soins palliatifs (AQSP), organized this year\nin collaboration with the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration internationale francophone de soins\npalliatifs (FISP).<\/p>\n\n

In January 1975, after years of\nplanning, Dr. Balfour Mount opened the very first palliative care unit in\nQuebec at Montreal’s Royal Victoria Hospital, paving the way for a compassionate,\ndignified, and person-centred movement. As Dr. Mount so aptly put it: ”\nWhen pain and other symptoms are controlled, there really is limitless\npotential for quality of life at the end of life.”<\/p>\n\n

The Quebec Coalition for\nPalliative Care Access (the Coalition) is proud to highlight how far we’ve come\nsince then, and to reiterate the importance of equitable access to\ncompassionate, dignified and comfortable care.<\/p>\n\n

Today, despite five decades of\nprogress, palliative care remains largely misunderstood. Contrary to the\nperception held by many Quebecers, palliative care is not limited to pain management\nin the last days of life. Rather, palliative care aims to relieve the full\nrange of symptoms – physical, psychological, social and existential –\nassociated with a serious illness. It should be offered from the moment of\ndiagnosis and can bring significant benefits throughout the care trajectory.\nThis care should be accessible across all settings\u2014at home, in CHSLDs, hospices,\nand hospitals.<\/p>\n\n

“Too often,\npeople still believe that palliative care is only for the very last days.\nHowever, earlier access helps to better manage symptoms, reduce anxiety and\nbetter prepare the patient and loved ones for what comes next,” points out\nDr. Justin Sanders, physician and Director of Palliative Care at McGill\nUniversity.<\/p>\n\n

“Although it has\nbeen available for 50 years, palliative care remains a poorly understood\nsubject that frightens people suffering from serious illnesses. Yet, offering\npalliative care means promoting a better quality of life. It’s about\nalleviating suffering, but also enabling patients and their loved ones to live\nbetter every day,” adds Dr. Olivia Nguyen, physician and president of the\nSoci\u00e9t\u00e9 qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise des m\u00e9decins de soins palliatifs (SQMDSP).<\/p>\n\n

A\nsurvey conducted by IPSOS in March 2023<\/a> (in French) reveals a persistent\nlack of awareness of palliative care in Quebec. Nearly 80% of respondents\nmistakenly believe that palliative care is limited to pain management at the\nend of life. Less than a third of those surveyed knew that bereavement support\nis an integral part of palliative care, and less than half were aware that such\ncare is  <\/span>ffered in the home. These\nresults underline the importance of raising awareness of this fundamental right\nand of the many benefits of palliative care.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

To celebrate National Hospice\nPalliative Care Week 2025, the Coalition is inviting the public to view and\ncirculate a video that explains how “Palliative Care\nis About Living Well”<\/a>, giving voice to those touched by this essential\ncare.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Coalition also invites\neveryone to feel empowered to talk with their care team and discover how\npalliative care can enhance life, at any point in the disease trajectory.<\/p>\n\n

The Coalition is a group of some\n30 organizations whose mission is to promote, in a spirit of solidarity,\nequitable access to quality palliative care by promoting the various aspects of\nthis care in Quebec. It salutes the tireless work of palliative care\nspecialists, but also of all professionals who, without being experts in the\nfield, are committed to offering an approach imbued with compassion and\nrespect.<\/p>\n\n

About the AQSP-FISP 2025 Congress<\/b><\/p>\n\n

On May 8 and 9, the Quebec City\nConvention Centre will host the 34 th annual congress of the Association\nqu\u00e9b\u00e9coise de soins palliatifs (AQSP), organized this year in collaboration\nwith the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration internationale francophone de soins palliatifs (FISP).\nUnder the theme “Palliative care and community: here and elsewhere”,\nthe congress will bring together professionals, researchers, managers and\nvolunteers from Quebec, Europe and Africa for two days of training, reflection\nand exchange. This annual event is a unique opportunity to advance clinical knowledge,\nforge links within the French-speaking palliative care community and recharge\nour batteries together.<\/p>\n\n
