A Word from the Director<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since last June 17, Canada has officially adopted a law that legalizes euthanasia and assisted suicide throughout its territory. The official text of the law mentions that some people in Canada are now exempted from the offenses of culpable homicide, of aiding suicide and of administering a poison, as long as they invoke\u00a0a reasonable belief, even if it is\u00a0a\u00a0\"mistaken belief\"\u00a0(>><\/a>).<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, the spiral to extent the law has not taken time to bare its teeth: barely 11 days after its adoption, the new law was already challenged in court to withdraw the criteria of \"reasonably foreseeable death.\" In this twisted logic of \"access to death\", the direct consequence will be the continual expansion of the selection criteria. And while defenders of death on demand fight for its universality, too few people are concerned about palliative care being attacked, rather than supported, for the\u00a0only reason that their doctors\u00a0want to keep on taking\u00a0care of their patients without killing them.<\/p>\n

In this context of tension, as\u00a0we mentioned in our press release following the adoption of the law (>><\/a>),\u00a0Living with Dignity<\/i>\u00a0will continue to respond to this cancerous trend by\u00a0defending the essential foundations of our society, not only to protect the most vulnerable among us, but also to preserve the conscience of future generations to whom\u00a0our society is leaving a poisoned legacy.<\/p>\n
