Legalising euthanasia\u00a0is never a\u00a0good idea, but it's a particularly bad idea\u00a0in these\u00a0difficult economic times, explains\u00a0Baroness\u00a0Campbell\u00a0of Surbiton. The debate on euthanasia\u00a0is all the rage\u00a0in many countries. In Quebec\u00a0there is a respite\u00a0until just after the elections, but it risks coming back to the table.\u00a0In Canada, the Canadian Medical Association\u00a0has\u00a0begun\u00a0consulting\u00a0its members<\/a>, as well as\u00a0the public<\/a>.\u00a0The\u00a0elected representatives of New Hampshire\u00a0have just\u00a0voted\u00a0against\u00a0a bill\u00a0which would have\u00a0legalised assisted suicide<\/a>,\u00a0just like what happened\u00a0in Oregon.\u00a0The\u00a0controversy is very much alive in France<\/a> as well.\u00a0In Australia,\u00a0where euthanasia\u00a0was briefly legal (before\u00a0the law\u00a0was nullified),\u00a0the discussions have commenced anew<\/a>.\u00a0And it's also taking place in Great-Britain,\u00a0where\u00a0the\u00a0Supreme Court just delivered a verdict\u00a0demanding\u00a0more clarification\u00a0into the law\u00a0forbidding assisted suicide<\/a>.<\/p>\n Baroness Campbell tells us that in these times of recession, the danger of euthanasia towards the elderly or people with disabilities is\u00a0greatly heightened<\/a>.\u00a0She affirms that the results of a long period of economic slowdown [as witnessed in England, but also in Quebec] have shown the hardening of attitudes towards the most vulnerable members of society.<\/p>\n With all we could have\u00a0read lately in\u00a0the news<\/a>\u00a0pertaining to\u00a0the subject of\u00a0cuts<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Quebec health services<\/a>,\u00a0it wouldn't be too astonishing\u00a0to see people begin to react as describes Baroness Campbell.<\/p>\n I have already written pertaining to the subject of\u00a0risks\u00a0that weigh against\u00a0people\u00a0living with disabilities\u00a0should the\u00a0legalisation\u00a0of euthanasia come to pass<\/a>,\u00a0or \u00ab medical\u00a0aid in dying\u00a0\u00bb.\u00a0I've also written on the subject of\u00a0the economic aspect of euthanasia\u00a0or\u00a0of assisted suicide<\/a>.\u00a0The risks\u00a0are real and as human beings, we cannot ignore them.<\/p>\n The idea of legalising euthanasia\u00a0or assisted suicide, even if we disguise them under the term \u00ab\u00a0medical aid in dying\u00a0\u00bb, is never a good idea.
