Ten years after the legalization of euthanasia in their country, the people seem to have become\u00a0comfortable with\u00a0the idea. Is this what will happen in Quebec if Bill 52 is adopted?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The members of the parliamentary commission on Bill 52, particularly\u00a0V\u00e9ronique Hivon, MNA\u00a0for Joliette\u00a0and Minister of Social Services and Youth protection,\u00a0assures us that the\u00a0bill will not apply to children or people with dementia.\u00a0But however,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lapresse.ca\/le-soleil\/actualites\/societe\/201309\/17\/01-4690381-aide-medicale-a-mourir-le-pq-et-la-caq-ouverts-a-lacces-aux-personnes-dementes.php\">as writes Pierre Pelchat\u00a0in\u00a0an article published\u00a0in Le Soleil<\/a>,\u00a0the Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois\u00a0and the\u00a0Coalition Avenir Qu\u00e9bec \"are open as to whether medical aid in dying be eventually offered to people suffering from dementia\". Certain groups, such as the Coll\u00e8ge des m\u00e9decins, have already asked the parliamentary commission that the bill be\u00a0broadened to include minors and inapt people. It would be very naive to believe the government's guarantees that the law is only intended for a reduced number of targeted people. We must foresee that\u00a0a few years after the law has been adopted, it will be broadened\u00a0to include minors and inapt people.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the Belgians who accept the idea of euthanasia for children and people with dementia, very vulnerable groups, do they really understand the meaning of the questions that were put forth during the survey?\u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/vivredignite.blogspot.ca\/2013\/09\/resultat-de-sondage-montre-que-la.html\">recent survey\u00a0led\u00a0by Ipsos<\/a>\u00a0on behalf of\u00a0Living with Dignity\u00a0clearly demonstrated that Quebecers are very confused by what the term \"medical aid in dying\" is supposed to mean.\u00a0Maybe the Belgians are confused as well?\u00a0However euthanasia has been legal in their country for the past ten years and the wording they are using there is clearer than that which is being used for Bill 52 here.<\/p>\n<p>We have to conclude that the Belgians have become accustomed to the idea little by little. Ten years of euthanasia have really desensitized them to the gravity of the action. Even if the majority of Quebecers were opposed to the idea of euthanasia for minors and the inapt at the moment of the adoption of Bill 52, the question one must now ask is: how many years must pass by before we become as desensitized and open the door to euthanasia\u00a0for our most vulnerable groups?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0La Libre survey demonstrates\u00a0that 70%\u00a0of Belgians accept the idea\u00a0of euthanasia for children and people with dementia.
